Dailey, in his book Understanding People In Organizations,defines stress as any demand made on the body that requires psychological orphysical adjustment. Many people think of stress as always being something bad. However, stress sometimes can be good. Stress is part of our every day life. It can have a motivating effect or a demotivating effect. Each of us have ourown level of how much stimulation or stress we need in our lives to keep us fromgetting bored.1 Others however, have a much lower tolerance for stress stimuli. So managers must be able to look at each individual and decide if the individualhas a high or low tolerance for stress. Managers can do this only if they havea good understanding of what causes stress. III. TYPES OF STRESSStress can come from a multitude of different reasons, but forsimplicity lets break it down into two forms: individual induced stress andphysical environment stress. Individual stress includes things such as roleconflict, role ambiguity, work overload, and responsibility for others. Roleconflict occurs when accomplishing one job inhibits or greatly reduces thechance at completing another assigned task. In this case the person who istasked to do the jobs will incur some type of stress while trying to figure outhow to get both tasks accomplished in the given amount of time. How much stressand if it will impact the individual positively or negatively will depend on theexperience level of the individual. Role ambiguity is when an individual is notsure of what their job entails. It makes it hard for a person to decide on whattheir priorities are and how to manage their time. Ambiguity can come from anumber of different things. A transfer, promotion, new boss, or new co -workerscan all cause an individual to experience some type of role ambiguity and addedstress. Both role conflict and role ambiguity relate to job dissatisfaction,lower level of self-confidence, and sometimes elevated blood pressures.2 Whenthese occur an individuals motivation decreases, family problems surface, anddepression sets in. Another form of individual induced stress is work overload. There aretwo forms of work overload: quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative occurswhen a person has too many things to accomplish and not enough time to do themin. Qualitative overload on the other hand is when the individual doesnt haveenough experience or expertise to accomplish the task(s) at hand. Both of thesetype of stressors are very detrimental to an individuals health. In factbecause employees feel as if they are doing two or more jobs at once and have notime to themselves they experience elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, andpulse rate.3 Another factor which affects employees is when they have or feelthey have the responsibility for other co-workers. This can happen not only tomanagers but also to other employees who may be group leaders or even unionleader. When you start adding up all of these individual responsibilities thepotential for employees having some sort of job related stress is very high. Now lets move on to physical work environment stressors. When people think of physical work environment they usually think ofsome type of hard labor. But its not confined only to physical labor, it alsoencompasses other factors such as noise, temperature, lighting, and pollution.4So that means even people in business and people in construction both have somekind of physical work environment stressors. Stress from noise doesnt have tobe caused from loud sounds. It could be the sound of the air conditioner ormaybe even the silence of some one who is sitting next to you and you know theyare watching what you do. Temperature also adds to frustration and thereforecauses stress. Whether its from working out in the blazing sun or from sittingbeside the air conditioner, they both can lead to stressful situations. Lightcan cause stress because of being to high, to low, or the wrong type. Any ofthese can make a person strain their eyes thus make them more susceptible tostress. When you put all the individual and physical stressors together you canse e why job stress is drawing more and more attention. These are brought out in stress managementcourses that some companies let their employees attend. Militaryleaders must look at their personnel and see what kind of pressure they areexperiencing to be effective leaders. In fact they need to be even morevigilant for signs of stress because they must be sure that an individual isready to go to combat, both in a physical and mental state, at a moments notice. VI. THE MILITARY AND STRESSThere are many things that can cause undo stress in the military. Theyrange from worrying about getting promoted to getting a college education and totrials and tribulations of being separated from ones family for long periods oftime. Some of the things already mentioned before such as responsibility forothers, role conflict, and role ambiguity are all present in the military workforce. Stress affects enlisted personnel as well as officers. Lets exploresome of the ways the military and military leaders can help the organization andits members to cope with stress and its effects. One way the armed forces has dealt with stress in its organization iswith EAPs.11 Almost all bases have some type of program to help members whohave some type of dependency. The first step however is usually the hardest, isto identify the people who need the help. Most of the programs allow the memberto volunteer for help without retribution. Individual commanders also can playa big part in helping members find help. By making sure their troops know aboutwhat programs are available and by having stress awareness training so othermembers know what to look for in their co-workers, the commander is able to stopchronic stress before it occurs. Another way the services deal with preventingstress are their physical fitness programs. Each unit should support theseprograms by assuring the individuals have time allotted to participate in them. Still another way that has picked up steam in the last couple of years is thequality of life working teams. These teams look for ways to improve the qualityof living both during work hours and after. So as you can see the military isconcerned about stress and are taking great steps in trying to reduce itsaffects. VII. SUMMARYWe have taken a look at what the definition of stress and some of thecauses of stress in the work place. It is important to try and reduce thesecauses as much as possible so that employees wont get any stress relatedsymptoms. Also it was stated how a persons body reacts when it encountersstress. Then the signs of stress that managers need to look for were discussed. After that some of the ways organizations can help it employees manage stresswere looked at. Finally, it was shown how the military is handling stress amongits members. As the world gets more diverse stress in the work force willcontinue to grow. It is imperative for managers and leaders to be able torecognize stress, understand its causes, and know how to alleviate it in theirorganizations so that it can continue to grow and be productive.

It was the year 3000. The world was just coming out of another major war, World War Four. It has been a little over a year since the war ended. Things are recovering nicely. My older brother T.S. was recruited, he survived. We were happy to see him come home. School has just started back again, things have changed, the teachers seem to be very timid and quiet, they have hardly given us any homework. A lot of people I know have lost their families, I'm lucky to still have my family. None of my close friends were effected either, my friends and I are all well off, we could afford not to get hurt. This was are last year in school. We were to graduate in four months; then we would never have school again. The month before school ended, some talk about the Hitler of World War Four was afoot. See, what this man tried to do was take over the world with an army of ?zombies.? Actually they weren't really zombies, they were normal people, but with chips in their head. But, this man, Alexander, couldn't just get a lot of people to volunteer to be zombies, so he tried to take over a small country. The country was Kerblakistan. He actually did take quite a few prisoners, and he also had quite a few allies, they were Japan, Germany, and China, they were all promised the world. But, the rest of the world was against him, us being the most powerful. We completely destroyed Japan and Germany. This was no large war, the smallest of all the world wars. So, rumor has it that Alexander, who disappeared after the war, was back at the same old stuff again. He is said to have taken the soldiers from the war, to turn into his zombies. The government was not ready to deal with, or look into this, after this war. But, there has been speculation on what could happen. So, here we are at home, my friend Jay, and my brother T.S. and I. We had just heard on the news that Alexander has assembled an army and has just invaded the northwest coast. He has not killed many people, but only taken them prisoner. The army has had unsuccessful attempts to stop him, being worn from the war. Alexander's army was growing larger and larger, the zombies were not unstoppable but close to it. So, we all get in my car and head down to the army surplus store. Being an ex-soldier, my brother was entitled to buy any weapons he wanted, on top of the ones he already had. He bought us two guns apiece, and since Jay's parents were in space, he would be sticking with us. We bought some food rations and headed home, there was so much commotion, I'm glad we had an early start. We got to my brother's apartment, and turned on the news. We packed duffel bags with our weapons, food, clothing, and gas masks. We were preparing for something the world has never seen before. Then, we hopped in bed for a restless sleep. We awoke in the early morning to commotion outside. We saw no one, except for people walking aimlessly in the streets and police cars. It looks like the worst was happening, we locked the doors, ran downstairs, we notice there were no radio, or television communications. We boarded the windows and bolted the doors as best we could. Jay kept watch while we ate?and planned?for what would take place. After we had all eaten, we took a sheet of titanium from the attic, we all went down to the basement, with everything we needed and shut ourselves in with the titanium. Body Image and Sexuality Essays Body Image and Sexuality Paper Body Image and Sexuality Paper The first step in understanding the relationship between body image and sexuality is to understand the meaning of each. Body image is how one sees one’s own body. Despite the simple definition, there lies a complexity in the practical meaning of the word. Body satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) is influenced heavily by one’s culture: the norm of the ideal body. In the US, the ideal female body is low in fat yet curvaceous. However, in China, Ghana and Greece (Myth of Dionysius; Semiotic, 2006), the big bellies, fatness and heaviness in women are desired and related to happiness and abundance. Thus, the definition of body image is dependent on how one’s perception is influenced by his culture and surroundings. Sexuality Sexuality has a more academic definition, i. e. , the quality or state of being sexual (Sexuality, 2006). Unambiguously, it is one’s level of interest in sex. Sexuality is in most part a biological phenomenon, the interest of the female specie to the male as the opposite specie. However, there are aspects in the modern relationship that accept the fact of homosexuality. In this paper, we limit our research into the heterosexual aspect of sexuality. Two researches are being presented to show the scientific investigation conducted by professionals on the topic at hand. Research No. 1 McKay, A. of the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality (2000) discusses a survey conducted by Ackard, D. M. , Kearney-Cooke, A. , Peterson, C. B. on the effect of body image and self-image on womens sexual behaviors. In March 1997, Ackard, et. al, conducted a survey entitled Does Your Body Image Affect Your Love Life? featured in Shape magazine. The response of 3,627 women age ranging from 14 to 74 years old, completed college and weighing an average of 145 lbs, was a 66. 4% satisfaction with their overall self. In spite of this, 60. 2% of them were dissatisfied with their appearance and a while 80. 5% reported some degree of satisfaction with their ability to form and maintain relationships with others. (Mckay, 2000, p. 124) The survey resulted in a direct correlation between body image and sexuality, i. e. , those satisfied with their body image, responded as having higher frequency of sex and achieving orgasm, than those that are dissatisfied with their body image. Furthermore, the intimacy and adventure level of those the ones satisfied with their body image were higher than those that were dissatisfied: greater comfort undressing in front of their partner, greater comfort having sex with the lights on, greater comfort trying new sexual activities, and greater confidence in their ability to give their partner sexual pleasure. (Mckay, 2000, p. 124) In spite of the above, Mckay (2000, p. 124) noted that Ackard, et. al, (2000) concluded that overall satisfaction is the more significant influencing factor to the respondents’ sexuality, more than body image itself. This is evidenced by the fact that the overall self-satisfaction and ability to form and maintain relations with others resulted with a higher percentage than the satisfaction of the respondents with their own appearance, which is body image. The Ackard, et. al survey however has a limited respondent base, i. e. the respondents are readers of the fitness magazine and thus maybe highly focused on body image vs. the average woman. A wider subject base is considered in the next experiment and presents a more analytical assessment of the relationship between body image and sexuality. Research No. 2 In 1998, Wiederman, M. W. and Hurst, S. R. , conducted a study with 192 young women aged 18 to 21, 89. 6% were White, 7. 8% were Black, and 2. 6% were Latina, all psychology students of Ball State University, Indiana. In this experiment, specific measures were assessed relating to body image and sexuality as follows: (1) relationship status, dating (casually or exclusively) or committed; (2) Sexual experience, actual intercourse or oral stimulation; (3) Sexual esteem or the tendency to evaluate oneself positively as a sexual partner; (5) Attitudinal acceptance of casual sex using; (6) Actual attractiveness measured by a male and a female research assistant; (7) Body mass index (BMI); (8) Body dissatisfaction; (9) Self-rated bodily attractiveness; (10) Appearance orientation on habits related to one’s appearance; and (11) Social avoidance. (Wiederman Hurst, 1998) The results were interesting. Those that are in a relationship (some level of commitment with the opposite sex) were relatively smaller, objectively more attractive, and perceived themselves as having more attractive bodies. Furthermore, slightly more women who are not committed were dissatisfied with their body image. Similarly, those without any form of sexual experience were bigger and objectively less attractive. They also had limited or no initiative to perform oral sex to a male partner. For sexual esteem, those that scored high in self-rated bodily attractiveness had higher sexual esteem and are not intimidated in social activities highlighting one’s appearance. However, for both measures, there is a higher body image dissatisfaction rate on those with high sexual experience and sexual esteem. Thus, the authors concluded that the results of the current study are not definitive. (Wiederman Hurst, 1998) Relationship The simple answer for the question at hand is no: one’s body image is not a definitive factor to determine one’s sexuality. Humans have the power to overcome unpleasant, objectively unacceptable body image to achieve a positive overall self-satisfaction. Question 2 I agree with the Supreme Court’s response to question on whether Under the Constitution of Canada, the National Assembly, legislature or government of Quebec can affect the secession of Quebec from Canada unilaterally. In fact, this was the best answer to that question that the constitution is more than what is written there. It contains global rules and principles that govern the authority of the constitution. The Supreme Court ruled out that the constitution contains a few provisions that can be misleading if interpreted without considering underlying principles of federalism, rule of law, democracy, respect for minorities, as well as the principle of constitutionalism. The Supreme Court argued that the constit ution is based upon these principles and that democracy does not simply mean ‘simple majority rule’. Indeed, it exists in other values, given that province people and those who live in the territories live interdependently. The court argued that that would be illegal and would only be possible if the majority of Quebecers votes favored secession, which would be followed by negotiations. This would mean that all parties would be satisfied because negotiations mean that each party gives out on something in order to reach a concession (Bogart, 2005). Overall, the court’s response to the reference questions does not harm Canadian national unity. On the contrary, it supports it when it declares that the people of Canada are closely interdependent through economically, culturally, socially and politically and that a decision that would favor secession would put the strong ties at risk.
